Lunar Lava Tube

Japanese and American researchers have found a lava tube on the Moon large enough to shelter a lunar colony from harmful radiation and the wild temperature swings at the surface.

The entrance to the tube is in the Marius Hills on the Ocean of Storms.

Only 10 centimeters of lunar regolith is required to protect a lunar habitat from the heavy nuclei component of cosmic radiation and major solar events. And only a couple of meters of lunar regolith would be required to reduce radiation levels within lunar habitats below the legal maximum required for radiation workers on Earth (5 Rem per year).

So Lava Tubes are not necessary for lunar habitation.
